1. Came home from Canada last night and am currently EXHAUSTED, but since today's meme topic is very simple I'll do it anyway. :) [personal profile] inkstone asked about my top 5 comfort foods, so in no particular order:
- xi fan/congee
- steamed eggs
- scrambled eggs with soy sauce
- corn soup (I don't actually make this a lot, being lazy- my preferred version involves various other ingredients that include ham, which I rarely buy- but I do find it very comforting!)
- chicken soup, which by other people's standards is more or less homemade broth

2. A few random things I haven't the brain to make coherent:
a) I finally watched Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame! JING'ER/EMPRESS FTW.
ii) Board/card games I have played in the last 5 days: Dominion, Taboo, Hanabi, Ligretto, Star Trek Catan. (I'm not counting the construction of a homemade-gingerbread house that was overrun by gummy candies and invaded by bears of cracker/gummy origin.)
» I appear to have begun to learn to crochet while being delayed at an airport yesterday? At least, there is a ball of squishy gray yarn not-very-slowly being turned into an attempt at a beanie, and so far it doesn't actually look that terrible! The first 30 minutes or so were an exercise in frustrated confusion, though, and I had to unravel most of my initial work and redo it on the plane home. This is a new and exciting revelation: apparently one way to force me to pick up a new skillset is to give me a diagram, directions, and materials, and put me in a situation so boring that the only preferred alternative is to start learning it? WHO KNEW.

[livejournal.com profile] fandomaid is doing a buy it now fundraiser to support those affected by Typhoon Haiyan (donation information here). Since I'm usually terribly slow about filling fic requests*, I've offered 3 sets of up to 25 icons here (A:TLA, Saving Face, Love Actually, Star Trek Reboot, or non-fandom).

*Speaking of which, I am still working on the treat meme prompts. My writing-brain is slow to start, ugh.
glass_icarus: (junjou: akihiko hiroki [JR artbook])
Multifandom treat meme is still open! I haven't managed to fill anything yet since I have to prepare for a presentation this week, but in the meantime, prompt away! I'm just getting started, promise. :D

♣ This week's booklog:
+ Blade of the Immortal, v.1-2: I read these at Book-Off last week and it hasn't quite sucked me in (yet? haha), but I thought the mechanism of immortality was an interesting premise. Thoughts/opinions? Is this a series I should invest more time in?
+ Reader and Raelynx, Sharon Shinn: More interesting than the other Twelve Houses book that I picked up, definitely.
+ Troubled Waters, Sharon Shinn: I think this is my favorite out of all the Shinn books I've read so far. I loled at some "science what science" aspects of the worldbuilding, but since this is more on the fantasy side of SF/F, that was okay. Also, I found this setting much more intriguing than the Samaria or Twelve Houses ones.

♣ Found a new EP via angry asian man (soundcloud stream & free download at the link)! This has been a year of shiny new music for me; I'm quite enjoying Bright Vices. *___*

♣ Anyone interested in makeup blogs? Obviously tips and recs are never universal, but I spent an afternoon in a vortex of shiny pictures/etc. on sweet little place (mostly in French) and frmheadtotoe (thanks for the link, [personal profile] vi!).

♣ Random home remedy that my mom showed me recently: carve out the ends of an Asian pear, put it in a bowl, add some salt/rock sugar in the hole where the stem was, and steam it. The pear and its juices are supposed to be good for your throat/if you have a cough.

♣ And now for something completely hilarrible! Mandarin-speakers (I don't know if this also scans in Cantonese): 一只小白加一只小白是什麼?
glass_icarus: (korra: roasting fish)
It's treat meme time!

How to play:
    1. Leave a comment with up to 3 prompts. Specify any fandoms and/or characters you wish.
    2. Browse other prompts and leave treats at will!
    3. Anon comments are on, so prompt (or treat!) anonymously if you choose. :)

Notes:
  • I am not very Halloween-spirited, so this is not a trick-or-treat meme. However, if you want something Halloween-appropriate, feel free to say so!
  • You are NOT required to leave treats if you leave prompts, although the gesture would be appreciated. :)
  • If you do choose to leave a treat, you can do so in any way you wish- drabbles/ficbits, icons, artwork, etc. are all welcome.
  • I can't guarantee that I will be able to fill everyone's prompts, but I will do my best to make sure you get something if you comment!

Let's play! ♥

♠ Apparently this week my thing is going to be zouk earworms! Here's another of my favorite dance songs (the official video also cracks me up, and I like the dancing in it, which is a nice bonus!): Ne-Yo: One in A Million )

♠ UGH, how has it been almost two months since I've made a book post?? My backlog is officially too long to catch up on now, but if you're interested in finding out all the books I've skipped over, I have yearly bookshelves on goodreads. Currently I'm getting back to The Tale of Genji, which I haven't had sufficient brain to read in large doses (for once in my life I actually had to renew a book! twice!).

♠ I like the idea of treat memes, but I'm not terribly big on Halloween. How many people would be interested in doing such a thing if I made a post? (Multi-fandom, of course!)
glass_icarus: (red cliff: zhuge/zhou yu pigeons)
I am in a writing kind of mood today, but am sadly lacking in inspiration! There's the obvious Touch Pass assignment, but that requires more consideration and I still need to get my hand in in terms of writing fic again. SO! Toss me prompts please? Any fandom [incomplete list] will do, not just Kuroko. As usual I can't promise I'll fill everything, but I'll try to finish as many as I can.

♣ Finally managed to find someone to watch Fruitvale Station with me... if we can fit in the time. ^^; Wire fans, you might be interested in this Michael B. Jordan interview if you haven't already seen it. (... I still haven't managed to watch The Wire yet, sigh.)

♥ I signed up for Touch Pass after all! I'm still debating whether I want to add more requests, but I like the ones I have so far (super-short-form: Riko + Satsuki + Alexandra being awesome/terrorizing their players, Aomine + Kuroko relationship repair + preferably spectators loling forever, Riko + Hyuuga + Kiyoshi being their OT3 little selves). Now it's definitely time to play catch-up, I guess.

♠ Booklog for the week: Graceling, Agatha Christie, Georgette Heyer, Monkey High, Vampire Knight, One Piece, Loretta Chase, Shadow of the Templar reread )
glass_icarus: (kuroko no basuke: riko)
1. For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, [personal profile] thingswithwings's podfic of the AO3 feels tag is HILARIOUS, omg. xD ♥

2. Check out this gorgeous dance video by Julie Zhan & Can Nguyen from Poreotics! (Via angry asian man.) Sweater Weather )

3. Anyone want to talk Kuroko with me/drop prompts? Anyone else thinking of doing Touch Pass? It's been ages since I've written fic for anything!

After making some room escape game recs elsewhere, I figured it'd be worth reposting them here for anyone else who likes puzzle games! Room escape focus because that's all I've played in recent years, and also because I spent part of my time in Toronto playing The Room on my sister's phone, heh. As far as The Room goes, the storyline's got some pretty cheeseball ~magic~ stuff as far as I can tell (my sister's in Toronto and I'm not so I haven't played very far), but the puzzles themselves are awesome and the graphics are also extremely pretty.

Here are the online favorites I've bookmarked:
+ MOTAS: Mystery of Time and Space - almost entirely puzzle-focused. What little storyline there is makes no sense, but luckily you don't have to care? *g* Mostly what I liked about this one was the variety and the sheer number of levels.
+ Trapped: The White Rabbit - murder mystery and puzzles! Double the fun. Also, there are three parts, which makes it even more satisfying. I remember the graphics being really small Having replayed part of it after making the recs, the graphics are tiny, but to me it was definitely the most engaging of the three in terms of gameplay.
+ Something Amiss - I haven't actually played this one in a long time, so my storyline impressions are really vague, but there is also some sort of mystery plot to go with all the puzzles. Also has pretty nice graphics, though not as nice as The Room.

If you're wondering about my puzzle-game preferences, the Myst series is sort of my gold standard in terms of complexity and attention to detail. The gorgeous graphics are just a bonus, though; I grew up loving old-school Sierra games (King's Quest, Quest for Glory), Hugo's House of Horrors, and some even older purely-text games whose names I can't recall. After all these years, they're still my favorites- partly because of the imaginative storylines and/or adventure setups, but mostly because of the way they make you think creatively. It's the figuring-out part that I like best.

(Obscure fandom tag because I've only ever talked to 5 people about these games and haven't seen them mentioned in my corner of the internets since, well, I first started finding my corner of the internets.)
glass_icarus: (stigma: tit)
Earlier this week I went to Bookoff and read the first two volumes of Rurouni Kenshin. They were cute, but so far I am not extremely enthused, just interested enough to keep reading when I get a chance. I am in the mood for moar manga/anime series right now, so any recommendations/reminders for those &/or fluffy books would be welcome!

Also, I've decided to start Duolingo now that I'm freeeeeee, haha. I know a bunch of you have mentioned you're on it, but remind me? :) ♥

♣ Via angryasianman: Experiences of Asian-American Women survey. One of the things that caught my eye about this research study blurb is that the sponsor is Derald Wing Sue, who is one of my heroes for his academic publications about racial microaggressions! Not that that means that this study is necessarily related, but still. *geeks*

♣ Via [personal profile] littlebutfierce: Bao Phi, Yellowbrown Babies for the Revolution. There are many punch-in-the-gut lines, but for me what hit hardest was this:
I will never ask you to change your name
I will never ask you to change your name
your name is at home on my tongue

    do you hear me

[personal profile] deepad and amazeface compatriots ♥: Nice White Lady Authors Take a Hike: 'Vacations from Hell' made me laugh and laugh.

♣ Via [personal profile] vi: Taymiya Zaman: Not Talking About Pakistan - another glorious gut-punch. For some reason it made me think of Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai's line about kindness over genius.

1. I FINISHED CODING THE LAST OF MY 30 TRANSCRIPTS TODAY! \o/ \o/ \o/ and also OW, I feel a return of tendonitis-ish pain thanks to all that scribbling. I imagine this is what surfacing from scuba diving must feel like, except all in my brain.

2. Oh look, a Kuroko no Basuke friending meme! Maybe I'll actually play in this one while I'm recovering from thesis immersion... or maybe not, considering how little I've been able to interact with new people from the last friending meme I played in. ;____; (Hi, new people! I swear I am reading, it's just that I am awful at remembering to comment on things.) Also I have managed zero fannish content, icons notwithstanding. Woes.

3. Jeremy Lin meets Wat Misaka- ugh, my heart. JLin, how do you do this to me, I am not even invested in basketball. (Or... non-Kuroko basketball. >.>)

4. I've been going around spamming your threads at [personal profile] staranise's words and deeds love meme, but I know I've probably missed a bunch. If I haven't commented, please feel free to toss links my way! Also, I just put up my thread, because it would be nice to remember the things I've done that you felt were meaningful while I'm scrambling to accomplish so much thesis else.
glass_icarus: (saving face: wil train)
+ Came across this article on Chiune Sugihara on Sunday- another piece of history I never learned. Of course, I also live in the US.

+ So... there's going to be a Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon sequel?! (The title of that article makes me lol forever, though. Potential for returning cast members? 2 out of 4 lead characters are dead/ish? HMM, I WONDER IF WE'LL GET ANY MICHELLE YEOH. *facepalm*)
** eta; more info via zuky on tumblr. Wait a second, a JOHN FUSCO is the scriptwriter for a wuxia movie based on a Chinese novel? >:| I MIGHT HAVE TO TAKE BACK THAT GLEEFACE.

+ [personal profile] oyceter's kicking off a non-western fandom friending meme!

+ I think this is my favorite UpGoerFive entry so far, purely for reasons of this sentence: "In cells there are tiny hair-like things which DO THE WAVE very fast." xD

+ [personal profile] dingsi is hosting another love meme! Thanks for my thread; I plan to spend the next couple of planned procrastination sessions throwing sparkly hearts. ♥
glass_icarus: (trek: kirk/sulu landing)
A taxi, bullet train, bus, plane, shuttle bus, and car ride later, I am home! Proper babble will come later (maybe, after the jetlag), but I wanted to log the movies I watched on this trip before I forget them all.

1. The Four/四大名捕: This is the one movie I watched on the plane to Taiwan, having for once in my life actually slept for most of the flight. The wiki has a fairly un-spoilery summary, and a more coherent one than I can muster at the moment. I generally enjoy watching wuxia movies, and I am always in need of badass ladies, but the jealous love triangle aspect made it kind of meh. It was a fun watch at the time (long plane flights are good for fairly brainless entertainment!), but I wouldn't rewatch it if I had the opportunity.

[Technically The Return of the King should follow here, as I rewatched it with my cousins' kids on New Year's Day, but a) I'm almost positive all of you have seen it, b) all of the LOTR movies still leave me verklempt.]

2. Johnny English Reborn: The wiki says this was a James Bond parody; I'm only surprised it's not called "Mr. Bean Does James Bond." I watched this one at my aunt's as well, though I missed the beginning. There are definitely elements (the Bond-ish and British Imperial elements, now I think of it) that bothered me when I watched it, but upon further reflection, using bumbling Mr. Bean Johnny English as a James Bond substitute is an interesting way to highlight those issues. In any case, Rowan Atkinson and his comedic genius made me cackle myself silly regardless.

3. The Thieves/도둑들 (wiki): Part of the movie marathon I had on the flight home, and also it has replaced Ocean's Eleven as the heist movie OF MY HEART. I loved Ocean's for the teamness of it, but The Thieves has layers and layers of infighting and intriguing as well, which makes things so much more interesting! (And also much more practically self-interested.) All the characters are amazingly developed and flawed, and I especially appreciated that the ladies varied in age and outlook and skill-sets, and that none of them were ever primarily a love interest.

4. Painted Skin: Resurrection/畫皮II (wiki, youtube: trailer, youtube: Korean-subbed): Wiki has a very short summary and the trailer is pretty spoilery, so I will just say that Vicky Zhao + Zhou Xun = FLAILY HANDS OF YAY!! Also, they have more chemistry together than Vicky Zhao does with her actual love interest in this movie, which I think is more awesome than it is a mistake. Heh. Sorry, actor dude.

5. Rurouni Kenshin (live action): I watched this without having consumed the manga or anime versions, and I liked it a lot! Went *____* at the fight scenes, and also Kenshin and Kaoru, who were adorable. Now I'll have to hunt down the rest, dammit. (Maybe before school starts up again? I don't have that much time to be fannish these days!)

6. Clash/Bẫy Rồng (IMDb): Being a mob-type movie, this was distinctly more grim. Fight scenes were much dirtier (which comes with the territory), but also pretty fun to watch. I enjoyed Trinh being a boss, but am not so sure I enjoyed the movie as a whole- there is quite a bit of fridging, including spoilers (trigger warnings apply) ) Also, Clash is not nearly as character-driven as the other movies I watched on the flight home, and the plot was a little flat. I think these are flaws in most contemporary action films, though, so it would probably be unfair of me to single out this one.

Finally, just for the record: I want ALL THE FANWORKS for The Thieves and Painted Skin: Resurrection! (Tagging to remind myself to nominate them for Kaleidoscope.)
glass_icarus: (korra: roasting fish)
+ Currently debating the [community profile] white_lotus exchange- I really want to play (and am overdue for a rewatch!), but given all the things I have to accomplish over winter break, I don't know if I'll be able to manage even a treat. :< Also, there's that A:TLA thing I still haven't finished (er, ~2 years later) that I should really get done first!

+ Finally finished watching Natsume S4 yesterday! ALL THE FEELS (and ALL THE CRIES), omg. ♥ Natsume is actually atypical for me in terms of anime- I don't usually go for slice-of-life in things I watch, though I like to read them- but I do so love its themes around chosen family and kindness.

+ Re: other things I've been watching- SAO just got more exciting again?? Or has it just been a while since the ~cliffhanger~ has been sufficiently hang-y?

+ A partial list of my Kuroko ships of glee, for no reason at all: Aomine/Kuroko/Kagami (all permutations), Kiyoshi/Hyuuga/Riko (all permutations), Kise/Kasamatsu, Midorima/Takao, Aomine/Kise, Kise/Kuroko (... maybe more one-sided than not, I really love the canon dynamics xD), Momoi/Riko (RUNNING THE WORLD), everyone/everyone (especially Seirin and Miragen ♥)

+ Ask me anything! No, really. (Well, except maybe things involving finals.)
glass_icarus: (avatar: appa hiding)
Playing in a friending meme right before finals crunch was a GRAND PLAN, self! My urge to socialize (on the internet or otherwise) sometimes surfaces when it's incredibly inconvenient. ^^;

In any case: hi, new people! I am terrible at introductions, so instead this is an ask-me-anything post. Fandom and non-fandom questions are welcome, though I hope you don't mind if it takes me a while to answer.
glass_icarus: (uraboku: touko/tsukumo pinky-swear)
Guys, talk to me about your fandoms? I'm so occupied with school that I find it hard to be remotely coherent when I don't have to be, but I miss fandom talk so much. What have you been reading/watching? What are the tropes and friend/ships you love (or hate)? What makes you squee? What makes you rage? (Also, has anyone else into Kuroko no Basuke managed to solidify shipping preferences through reading fic, or is that just me? >.>)
glass_icarus: (avatar: momo)
» Things I've been meaning to watch this summer that I have not watched:
+ the Olympics (beyond some gold-round women's foil & an earlyish South Korea vs. US men's doubles badminton match *___*)
+ The Wire
+ more Coffee Prince
+ Natsume S4

Thing I have been watching obsessively instead: Kuroko no Basuke. Like, seriously, it's probably been months since I have been this full of RIDICULOUS GLEEFACE, and definitely the first time- well, barring Jeremy Lin- that I've gleefaced over something involving basketball! There may be icons coming up in the near future, heh. At this rate I'm gonna have to institute an "I BLAME [personal profile] inkstone" tag. :P

» Interesting link that came up via fb: Home: reflections for Anthony Shadid. To be honest I wasn't enthused about all of the passages, but I do like things that get me thinking about diaspora, so.

» I've been down with a summer cold since Thursday! BOO. Or, okay, I probably should be down/semi-quarantining myself but a) there is no air conditioning in my apartment and it has been DISGUSTING the last few days and b) I am really stubborn when it comes to not missing dance classes and/or people that I rarely see, so I've been drinking copious amounts of honey/lime(/ginger) tea and washing my hands all the time/etc. instead. >.>

Annnnd that's my procrastination limit for today, so it's back to work for me!
glass_icarus: (junjou: akihiko hiroki [JR artbook])
Belated & abbreviated watchblog!

1. Snow White and the Huntsman. Dear internets, I was forewarned, and it still made even less sense than I was expecting! Totally agree with [personal profile] oyceter that there are about four logical movies that could have been made out of it (two of which I would actually have enjoyed watching). I should have listened to you all and not paid to see it in the theater, but at least I didn't pay full price?

2. Korra. I... keep trying and failing at coherence, but in the meantime, my general reaction:
in macro form )

3. The Dark Knight Rises. I watched this post-dance-class, not for full price, and with my brain half off, which may have contributed to my enjoyment of the movie in addition to my complete lack of knowledge of comics-verse. spoilers-ish )

4. Kuroko no Basuke, for which I blame [personal profile] inkstone! ♥ I seriously inhaled all of the manga and anime in a day. I don't even know where to begin talking about it and also am in a state of total A:JKS:DLFHSDL:F *\o/*!!!!!!, but if you enjoy sports series and/or are a sucker for all things team like me, I recommend checking it out! Also: endless eye candy, even though there aren't a lot of female characters. >.> [personal profile] inkstone's promo post has video clips.
