I think it is awesome because, y'know, I have pretty much zero interest in what passes for mainstream steampunk ('cause Victoriana: not exactly my thing) so I am SUPER EXCITE to see a fantasy!Asian steampunk setting! In an actual canon source of awesome! WIN ALL AROUND, SAYETH I.

also I think the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation tech and HI SOKKA'S INGENUITY is fabulous foreshadowing for this, woooo! (CAN WE HAS POST-SERIES SOKKA AND INVENTOR SHENANIGANS PLZ?!?!?!)

I feel that same way about mainstream steampunk! I mean, I do like Victoriana, but I feel steampunk glorifies it in ways that are very uncritical.

BUT SOKKA. Haha, now I have this secret fantasy where Sokka is the architect/mastermind behind Republic City. Like, it's his creation, and he and Suki run everything in the background but only a few people know, and most of the time they disguise themselves as regular people and romp around the streets testing out stuff that Sokka makes.
