om. Toqué!, Montreal: HOLY WOW this place was amazing. I've been there only once, a few years back; some friends decided to road-trip up to Montreal and, as often happens, our city rambling ended up being an impromptu food tour. Toqué! was the only stop that we'd actually planned in advance, because my friend is in love with pork (among other things) and there was pork sous vide on the menu. It was the single splurge we allotted for the trip, and it was worth every penny. Duck maigret! Foie gras! The raw oyster my friend ordered that tasted so good he kept licking the shell after it was empty! It was all so delicious, I don't think any of us even stopped to take foodporn pictures, and the friends I was with all have epic food photography tendencies. I'm just saying.
nom. Juliette et Chocolat, Montreal: Same friends, same road trip. Chocolate martinis, is all I'm saying. Also, crepes!!
nom. Pho Lien, Montreal (at least I'm pretty sure it was Pho Lien!): During Interfusion this summer, 7 of us decided to go for Vietnamese food. This was an exercise in hilarity that involved the trunk, since our rental car only seated 5! The noodles were delicious, but what really sticks in my head is the group picture we took outside the restaurant, thereafter dubbed "pho the win."
nom. Mother's Dumplings, Toronto: There's nothing so awesome as bonding over food, and every time I visit dance friends in Toronto that is exactly what we do, hee! The dumplings were tasty- not the ~best ever~, but definitely solid- but the best part was the dance-family-building, haha. Also, the assorted dessert buns were really good (my friend ordered them on the sly and was like "I'm not telling you guys what's in them, just trust me" xD).
nom. Union Oyster House, Boston: In my ballroom days, this was a traditional stop for me and my teammates whenever we went to the MIT competition. It's on the expensive side for student wallets, but it was worth it; there's nothing quite like New England seafood. ♥
nom. momofuku ssäm bar, NYC: A few years ago, about 10-12 of my friends got together for bo ssäm and it was the best. We had the pork shoulder, not the duck, and we totally need to do it again. This is also on the pricy side, but in a bigger group, it's not so wallet-breaking!
nom. Gobo, NYC: One of the few vegetarian places I've been to, being omnivorous- I went there for a fandom meetup a few years ago and it was tasty good fun. I still remember their yucca fries!
nom. Jeepney, NYC: This is a pretty recent find for me! I'd never had Filipino food before (there aren't all that many Filipino restaurants here, afaik) but omg everything was delicious. I went with a couple of friends who keep halal, so we ordered strictly seafood, but next time? I'm definitely returning with people who eat pork. *g*
nom. Xi'an Famous Foods, NYC: This place totally satisfies my taste for spice. Multiple locations, cheap, and also? $3 lamburger.
nom. Caracas Arepa Bar, NYC: Amazing arepas, omg. *___*
nom. Manolo Tapas, NYC: This is a little neighborhood tapas place in Washington Heights and it is great. I stumbled on it with a grad school friend (I think it was after I'd finished my thesis?) and we were totally blown away. :9
nom. Africa Kine, NYC: I can't remember what we were doing in the area, but I came with a couple of grad school friends last year and we fell in love with the food- especially the pintade!

Date: 2013-12-18 09:52 pm (UTC)A quick question, if you don't mind: the better half and I have two half-days in the city en route to family next week, and I'd like to have good Cantonese food. Any suggestions on that front? M.

Date: 2013-12-18 10:24 pm (UTC)Hmm, I don't usually go looking specifically for Cantonese food that isn't dim sum (though! if you do want dim sum, Golden Unicorn and Jing Fong are my preferred places to go; Jing Fong I believe does half price on weekdays). Maybe Congee Village?
