some watchblog backlog!

Since I went show-marathoning yesterday (twice), I figured I'd finally tackle the list of things I have watched & flailed about over the last few months!
» Mononoke: (Not Mononoke Hime!) Okay, first off: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ART, hooooooomg. *____* I could stare at all the dizzying intricate colorgasm forever. Also, CREEPY (gateway to the dark side, hello!
inkstone is probably cackling at having dragged me partway into the horror genre, ahaha. ;D ♥). There are five different story arcs, following the (unnamed) Medicine Seller and his encounters with various mononoke; all of them actually work for me, though I'm still in the process of figuring out what about them makes me tick (all I know is that mindless gore doesn't, heh). The series is a spin-off of the Bakeneko arc of Ayakashi*- though Mononoke also has its own (independent) Bakeneko arc- which I also loved and is arguably my favorite arc of that series.
* I went hunting for the rest of the series last night & ended up discovering an entirely different one. For clarification, since both blurbs are below, the series related to Mononoke is Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales.
» Tumbling: FLAIL FLAIL FLAIL ALL THE FLAIL. A couple of you have put up with me on gchat already, but seriously! This show is like the longest best love letter ever to TEAM, and you all know I'm a sucker for TEAM. ♥
littlebutfierce has an intro post that I keep on linking, hahaha, but EVERYTHING I love about the show is in there (except my fleets and fleets of ships. xD I need to save some squee for my ~grand plans~ later, though, so I'll elaborate on those then!).
» Coffee Prince: THIS SHOWWWWWWWWWW OMG. EUNCHAN IS THE BEST. DELIGHTFUL ADORABLE SMALL CHILD AT HEART WHO LOVES FOOD AND IS RIDICULOUS AND HAS A PUPPY BOYFRIEND AS WELL AS THE STRENGTH OF AN OX AND. JUST. FFFFF HER FACE. ♥ ♥ ♥ Also Han Seong! and Yoojoo! and of course, Han Gyul, whom
sarashina & I instantly dubbed Mr. Naked (with legs), lolol. (We have been watch-partying it, which always makes things extra-delightful, because then we can has ALL THE CACKLING AND CAPSLOCK GLEE on gchat.) We are still not done yet but OMG so excited!!!! Also I am going to want, like, ALL THE OT4 FIC IN EXISTENCE when I'm done (actually I'm barely resisting hunting some down right now) so if anybody happens to have recs for some, uh, here's a heads up? ;D Also also: would DIE for fic where Eunchan meets Haruhi (Ouran High School Coffee Prince? anyone???) because YES. YES YES YES PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.
» My Name Is Kim Sam Soon: This has been on my to-watch list FOREVER & I finally got to marathoning it over study breaks during finals week. xD FULL OF ADORABLE. ALSO, FOODPORN. ♥ I love Kim Sam Soon SO MUCH. I love that she isn't thin, that she's a patissier who takes pride in her work and who believes in putting her life and heart into the sweets she makes, that she drinks and eats a lot and curses and is hilarious while drunk, that she backtalks in her head and sometimes out loud, that dating makes her kind of a nervous wreck, that she's got men who chase after her and doesn't know what to do about it. I love her relationship with her family, that she's so good at reading people's feelings even if she's not always sure what to do about it, that she extends so much kindness with an open hand, even when she isn't offered it. I also love Jinheon and Heejin and Henry (um, hello Daniel Henney! and swimsuit moments!), but really, SAM SOON ALL THE WAY.
» eta; STILL BRAINLESS APPARENTLY, I FORGOT TO ADD Natsume Yuujinchou: ENTIRELY made of warm fuzzies! As has been stated and restated by possibly half my circle, this is a show about discovering and reaching for kindness. I love that it's so character-sketchy, all about little slice-of-life things and the many quirks of human relationships. It's very quiet, a little wistful, and unlike those stories that hit you like lightning, Natsume's work their way into your heart almost imperceptibly, like they were always there. :3 (Also: Nyanko-sensei is MY FAVORITE ahahaha ♥, Natsume/Taki/Tanuma = OT3 of my heart, Hinoe/Reiko ftw, etc.)
And that brings us to last night's marathons!
» Ayakashi: So, as stated above, I went looking for the rest of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, having only seen the Bakeneko arc, and instead turned up an entirely different series. Oops. The completely different art style should have tipped me off, but I haven't been so brain-ful recently. ^^; This one has an entirely different premise, i.e. ayakashi confer their superpowers upon those human beings who, under special circumstances, become their handlers. It's really wince-worthy re: mental & physical disability (on oh so many levels), and I wouldn't really recommend it based on its storyline either (super special rather clueless boy hero saves the day- oh wait, where have we heard that one before? Also, ALL YOUR FEMALE CHARACTERS DESERVE BETTER OMG. I don't care if lots of your fridgings were not exactly fridgings, I call that emotionally cheap jerkwadding.). I guess it was interesting in that I wanted to find out what was going on with some of the characters (the female ones; our boy hero protag was... pretty boring), but I think I finished it mostly on the strength of my perplexity/wtf. (Also, it was 12 eps.)
» Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales: This is what I was looking for. ♥ There are three arcs, including Bakeneko; I finished the other two last night. The first is a ghost story (a woman wronged seeks vengeance on her husband), and the second... confused me, since it's basically an epic love story that seems a little incongruous with the other two? Not at all what I was expecting (horror, obviously; I didn't find it creepy at all), but I thought it was a pretty fantastic love story. Anyway, the whole thing is well worth the watch, though I prefer Mononoke (& not only for its lusher visual aesthetic).

Date: 2012-01-09 06:38 pm (UTC)Of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, I do think the Bakeneko arc was the strongest of the trilogy. It's a good thing that one was last because the Kaiden and Tenshu Monogatari retelling really would have suffered if they'd gone after.

Date: 2012-01-09 10:17 pm (UTC)He does think he's so cool, and it's funny because on the one hand, I love him and agree with him, but on the other hand, he is actually ridiculous and nowhere near as smooth as he thinks he is, which is also lovable.

Date: 2012-01-09 08:31 pm (UTC)No OT4 recs off the top of my head...but there is some Eun-chan/Yu-ju fic (Floriography, Enchantment and Je ne sais quoi). If you like ensemble fic, I will shamelessly point to my Yuletide 2010 fic: The Opening of Coffee Princess.

Date: 2012-01-09 08:38 pm (UTC)Also YAY, thanks for the recs! I might save them for when I'm done, though. & ensemble fic = gleeeeeee. :D

Date: 2012-01-09 08:42 pm (UTC)It was one of the first kdramas I watched and remains one of my favorites. SO GOOD. EUN CHAN! ♥ AND HAN GYUL! AND BASICALLY EVERY ONE ELSE.
Kim Sam Soon is on my to-watch list and I think I should get around to watching it if there is foodporn and Daniel Henney!

Date: 2012-01-09 09:00 pm (UTC)Huh, I think Coffee Prince is the first kdrama I started too, though Kim Sam Soon is the first one I've finished (they're the only two I've watched so far, heh!). Anyway IT IS AN EXCELLENT FIRST. :D Also re: Kim Sam Soon, Sam Soon/pastries = OTP, and Daniel Henney's character is ridiculously sweet (and the swimsuit scenes are eeeeeexcellent xD).

Date: 2012-01-09 09:50 pm (UTC)HOW HAS IT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME TO WANT THAT BEFORE? If I cold bring things into existence through the sheer power of my want there would be a dozen fic on this premise.
