1. Last night's Rizzoli & Isles was underwhelming, to say the least:
REALLY, show? Turning tricks is the first/only/most logical recourse available to young female students in need of money in the biggest college town on the US east coast? This is not to be judgmental- I am just boggled and really cheesed at the implication that an intelligent young woman with clearly marketable skill sets thinks/ought to think that her body is the most marketable asset she has. Putting aside the questions of student loans, work study grants, financial aid packages, and whether or not the financial aid office is actually willing to conduct negotiations- off the top of my head, some things that would pay:
- bartending or babysitting jobs (granted, bartending courses cost something like $100, but it's possible to recoup your expenses really fast if you've got enough money to start with)
- becoming a writing fellow/TA/tutor/RA/similar, which tend to pay more than most admin-type student jobs and (if you're an RA) waives the cost of campus housing
- part-time job options off campus
- selling old textbooks
- dog-walking or cat-sitting
- departmental prizes for classwork/performance
- student fellowships
- being a note-taker for someone in your class (if it's a student services thing there are generally announcements of some sort, you can get paid something like $20 a pop, and the effort involved is MINIMAL)
- participating in paid surveys (hint: psych and neuro departments! most surveys take less than an hour! sitting through an MRI for research purposes usually gets you significantly more compensation, if you're okay with being someone's data source & qualify for project criteria!)
- alternative national/state/privately-funded scholarship sources or contests (SEARCHABLE ON THE INTERNETS, HELLO MR. GOOGLE)
Obviously these things aren't all terribly lucrative or feasible for everyone, nor are they likely to cover 100% of tuition even in torturous scheduling combinations, but gee- do you think any of the aforementioned would be likely options for a college-age woman in need of income to try first, writers? And what would you have come up with for a male student in a similar position?
I was also unimpressed with the character moments this ep, despite my continuing crush on Frost and my fondness for Rizzoli's mom. Meh. It might be time for me to drop this show.
2. I ended up rereading some older fics to take the taste of irritation out of my mouth, and I realized I hadn't pimped them! So:
+
dhobikikutti's Promise of the पुरवाई, a bilingual Mary Poppins fic written for the Racebending Revenge challenge
+ to serve the gods, an amazingface El Dorado fic by
bossymarmalade
+ from a few days ago,
crossedwires's icon-inspired A:TLA ficbit (Zuko! Mai! Toph!!), eeeee &hearts &hearts
3. Drabblefest is still in progress- I am hoping to get the last couple of prompts finished tonight, but in the meantime you can still pop in a few more requests! :) I'll repost everything for ease of reading (and probably some edits) at... some later point, heh.
