Title: pas de deux
Rating: G
Fandom: HP (Remus/Sirius, as always)
Every morning, they shuffle sleepily to the kitchen, trading off the responsibilities for tea and toast. The space between the counter and the table is a little too narrow for two, but they like it that way: soft nudge of elbows, worn fabric against bare hips. Waiting for the butter to melt, they share the daily crossword, fingers catching as they pass the pen between them. Sirius's sleep-tousled hair falls into both of their faces, but it’s Remus who tucks the stray ends back behind his ears, tangible expression of words they never say (but then, they never have to).
*snoozes*

Date: 2009-07-13 10:14 pm (UTC)(I have been mainlining the puppies since you linked to that love post with the tonnes of recs and art and drabbles. But in order to prevent old wounds from re-opening, I am limiting myself to either porn or AU. Incidentally, what's with people writing gen Remus and Sirius raise Harry? ::frowns::)

Date: 2009-07-14 12:50 am (UTC)your strategy looks pretty sound to me- although, you know, some of the best porn is also really angsty, and a lot of the AUs i've read were leaning towards the bitter side as well. Remus-and-Sirius-raise-Harry stories (STEALING HARRY! MADDEST HOUSE! &hearts &hearts :D er. well, perhaps not the latter.) are a pretty foolproof way to avoid the darker stuff, although i'm not sure if our definitions of gen are the same.

Date: 2009-07-14 04:27 am (UTC)Stealing Harry and Maddest House are love; I went back and saved everything to my harddrive, and in the process re-read Laocoon's Children in a day.
I was perhaps being flippant about gen, I am a little bitter about a well-written, long fic on ff.net that was Sirius and Remus raising Harry, with sequels that indicated the author had created OCs to pair each of them with. I do not wish to have to write AUs for my AUs!
(Shen Wei thoughts?)

Date: 2009-07-14 04:56 am (UTC)ah, Shen Wei! i was ambivalent about the performance in a rather odd and disjointed sort of way, and i'm still trying to process why that is. the dancers were very talented, albeit 99% white (as far as i could tell; i know i saw one guy with brown/darkish skin, but i could be wrong about some of the rest of them!), and the choreography was interesting, but for some reason the actual movements didn't... resonate with me? i don't really know how to describe it. i can't say that i wasn't moved, because i was, but with the exception of the final segment and a few specific sequences/individual solos along the way, i felt like i was watching through a lens. usually when i watch non-ballroom dance, my reactions are about 90% visceral and 10% analytical*, but this time around it was more like a 50/50 split. maybe even a 40/60. so, yeah, not sure how i feel about that.
*by "analytical" i mean that i like to look for similarities of movement across various types of dance, though in this case the "crosstalk" seemed to be more from... tai chi? i'm not good with qigong/martial arts stuff, so i could be talking out of my ass. *g*

Date: 2009-07-14 05:07 am (UTC)My Chinese-American friend was annoyed by Shen Wei because she felt it was very oriented towards the White West - marketing the exotic martial arts-meets modern dance aesthetic. Point of pedantry - was skin the only way you had of telling the dancers' race? That is, could you see their eyes and say whether they were East Asian or not? I sometimes find it easier to tell by program bios, which often have pictures.

Date: 2009-07-14 05:31 am (UTC)on the other hand, the actual segment titles (Tibet, Angkor Wat) and the incorporation of various other media (photographs, chants, and patterned sand on the floor)- those irked me, a little. i had trouble figuring out why, until you mentioned the "white West" audience aspect.
we were sitting up on the balcony, towards the back, so skin color was pretty much the only physical indicator for me. i did a quick program check, but none of the dancers had recognizably non-white names, and there were no pictures to be found.

Date: 2009-07-14 05:46 am (UTC)I see that he had his training in Chinese Opera. My friend loves Chinese opera, and has studied some Chinese traditional dance, so I presume that influences her. (Much as I wish to throw shoes at most Indian contemporary dance I see in the US).
How about body-calligraphy?

dance-painting. (<-- vocabulary fail. er. dancers reproducing the brush-paintings in chalk?)
