I haven't read the Kenshin manga but I found the anime pretty damn delightful - it's almost the only shonen, maybe the only shonen, where I was like 'wait, it's over? I don't have more to watch?'
The Samurai X OVA is darker and sadder than RK The Anime, but might be a good quick-ish way to scratch the itch.
