A very valid and good point. In most cases I don't think I do either. I guess what I was trying to express, is that I would rather ask "Do you need a ride to the polls Tuesday, since your car is in the shop?" and be told "Oh,no. I'm a German citizen, although I've lived here since I was four, so I don't have an accent!" or "Thank you for asking, but I'm a Guatemalan citizen. Couldn't you tell by the way I speak?" than assume that others are "other" because they are not middle class whites with collegiate vocabularies like me.
