talk bookish to me!
Apr. 22nd, 2009 01:51 pmThis post inspired by the fact that I am waiting for Swordspoint to be shipped to me, eeeee!
So! There's some new folks up in here, and I'd like to get to know you guys a little better. I am also a huge bibliovore, so, you know. Any favorite authors, poets, genres, books you guys have read recently? ;) Me, I'm an F/SF fan, heavy on the F and rather a snob regarding authors and writing in general. (Hence, this is a Twilight-free zone! No, you will not persuade me otherwise, unless it is to mock, sorry.)
Book-wise, I have what I call my Reclist of DOOM (see: tag), i.e. an extensive, detailed list of every book I can remember reading and loving since I was a kid, so there's plenty of good YA F/SF in there as well. To save you guys a bit of time, though: my favorite favorite author is Guy Gavriel Kay, because it's the most beautiful prose I've ever read. A recent close second is Takashi Matsuoka, though he writes more along the lines of historical fiction. A few other notables are Jacqueline Carey, Robin McKinley, Susan Cooper, and Patricia McKillip. (Yes, I'm aware that F/SF is a predominantly white body of literature; yes, I have been making an effort recently to look for good books by authors of color. Therefore, any suggestions you have would be entirely welcome!)
Poetry-wise, I adore e.e. cummings, Pablo Neruda, and Mary Oliver; a more recent find is Suji Kwock Kim. In terms of specific pieces that speak to me, I have favorite poems by Joy Harjo, Margaret Atwood, and Purvi Shah, among others. I also enjoy spoken word artists Kelly Tsai and Oveous Maximus, whose voices are inspirational and funny and powerful. If you haven't seen any spoken word, I highly recommend searching for them on YouTube; it's entirely worthwhile. &hearts
