05. Shrieking Shack, the morning after [HP; Remus/Sirius; G/PG] for [livejournal.com profile] secretsolitaire

Remus wakes curled around a soft black warmth, fingers tangled in the dusty sheets. Padfoot rolls over, tail thumping against his shins.

"Morning," Remus croaks.

Padfoot wriggles from his grasp, shifting. "Morning," Sirius says, sitting back on his haunches. "How are you feeling?"

"All right," Remus says, surprised. He cranes his neck, looking down at himself: nothing this month except for a couple of playful bites, the imprints of Padfoot's teeth already fading, and a few scratches that look like- "Sirius," he says reproachfully. "You didn't let me out again, did you?"

Sirius coughs. "Um."

Remus holds up his arm. "Bramble," he says. "Don't even think about it."

"It was only to the edge of the Forest, Moony! I had Wormtail and Prongs on lookout to make sure there was nobody around."

"Did I-"

"You didn't eat anything this time, I promise." Sirius frowns, splaying a tentative hand across Remus's belly. "You aren't nauseous, are you?"

Remus shakes his head.

"Good." Sirius grins, rubbing his stomach. "I'll bring you something after Pomfrey's gone, yeah?"

"You're lucky I'm too tired to yell at you," Remus says, resigned.

Sirius laughs and leans down for a kiss, so light that Remus might have imagined it but for the flush spreading across his cheeks. "Got to go before she gets here," Sirius says cheerfully. "I'll see you later!" He disappears down the stairs, leaving Remus to blink after him, pink and bemused.

06. clearly (not) the brains in this relationship [BBC Merlin; Arthur finds out that Merlin is actually smarter than he is; G] for [livejournal.com profile] archaeologist_d

Arthur's first impression of Merlin is that he's an idiot. An insubordinate idiot, but definitely an idiot. Despite everything they've gone through since that first meeting, Arthur still feels that his initial judgment is correct. Merlin may be loyal and argumentative and soft-hearted by turns, but none of his redeeming qualities truly negates Arthur's assessment of his mental faculties.

Sitting in council at his father's side, Arthur thinks that he may have underestimated his manservant.

"Er," says Merlin, flushing to the tips of his ears.

"What did you say?" Uther says, blinking slowly.

Merlin shuffles his feet. "Two thousand and sixty bushels, Sire. Depending on, er, the acreage of the workable land in the outlying villages, and the damage done to their harvests by the storm weather."

"Storm weather," Uther repeats, face blank.

"In the last reports, there was mention of a rainstorm that lasted for three days in the hill regions," Merlin says. "If it was particularly severe, a good portion of their stocks may have gone to seed as well."

Uther raises an eyebrow. "Do you know, Arthur, I think your manservant may be more useful than I'd first realized. Do let him attend council meetings when you haven't other tasks for him, hmm?"

Trying not to look as stunned as he feels, Arthur inclines his head. "Yes, Father. Of course."

Uther turns to Merlin expectantly. Merlin looks back, blinking helplessly, and Arthur fights the urge to drop his head into his hands.

Perhaps Merlin isn't an idiot. Perhaps he's just an idiot savant.

07. 21st century Merlin [BBC Merlin; Merlin & Arthur; G] for [personal profile] tacitus_3

He spends countless lifetimes missing Arthur, the pain of separation clenching tighter and tighter with each passing year until it becomes a kernel, a little dormant seed sitting in the pit of his belly. After a while, he stops thinking about the constant ache of Arthur's absence. It's human nature, after all, to become accustomed to sustained amounts of pain, and whatever else Merlin may be, he is (mostly) human.

He still feels it every time Arthur's born into the world, but the timing of it is always just off-kilter, and their lives never intersect. Centuries later, Merlin's stopped looking.

As it happens, the time he finally decides to close his eyes is the time Arthur walks into the bar where he's sitting with some friends from university, chatting with the bartender about the latest football match.

"Guinness, please," a smooth voice interrupts, and Merlin stutters to a halt in mid-sentence.

He turns, grinning helpless and foolish as recognition flares between them. "Always a prat, aren't you?"

08. ducks and margaritas [Good Omens; Aziraphale/Crowley, on holiday; PG] for [livejournal.com profile] vanishing_cake

"Angel," Crowley said, exasperated.

"Yes, dear?"

"This-" he gestured to the duck pond in St. James' Park- "wasn't what I was thinking of when I said 'holiday.'"

Aziraphale took a handkerchief out of his pocket, wiping the sweat from his brow. "Whatever are you talking about?" he asked. "It's a lovely day out. 30C, even."

"That's not what I mean! 'Holiday' implies sitting on a beach somewhere in a swimsuit, sipping margaritas-"

"And ogling scantily-clad men and women?" Aziraphale said, glancing at him sharply over the rim of his spectacles. "I'm sure I wouldn't know, of course."

Crowley refused to flush, but acknowledged the point. "Jealous?" he asked instead.

"Nonsense, my dear." Aziraphale was prone to blushing- he'd gone a bit, well, human, in that sense, among others- but he'd been pink from the sun already. Crowley eyed him suspiciously anyway.

It was funny how pointed the angel's silences could be, when he was in a mood. Crowley sighed and laid his arm casually across the back of the bench. "Margarita?" he said, snapping his fingers.

Aziraphale smiled and took the glass.

09. creme de cassis [Antique Bakery; Tachibana's latest girlcrush; G] for [personal profile] karanguni

"Tachibana-san," Ono says, pushing open the door to the bakery with sugar-dusted hands, "how do you feel about-" His voice trails off. Tachibana's customer service manner is dialed all the way up, which is never a good sign when he's talking to attractive women.

"Ah, Sayako-chan!" Tachibana says. "How lovely to see you again. What would you like this afternoon?"

The girl by the window laughs, fluttering her eyelashes. "Owner-san, you should know my tastes by now! I need a new favorite, so pick something good!"

Ono represses a sigh. Sayako's one of their newest patrons, a repeat customer, but Tachibana's excellent memory is never quite as immaculate when he's flirting. "What are you in the mood for?" Tachibana tries, smiling.

Sayako tilts her head thoughtfully. "I want something cheerful," she says, her eyes crinkling up at the corners. "It's Sunday afternoon, isn't it? Everyone should have something indulgent on a Sunday."

"Ah hahaha, of course." Tachibana's eyes widen a bit, panic flickering momentarily behind the charming facade. "Hmm, let's see..."

Ono clears his throat unobtrusively, raising an eyebrow.

"Ah, Ono!" Tachibana smiles in relief. "What do you have for me today? Something new?"

"As it happens, Kanda-kun and I have been experimenting with a few things today," Ono says deferentially. "We have a matcha-flavored mini cheesecake, a raspberry-glazed honey cake, and some very light cream puffs, but I think perhaps the chocolate mousse layered with creme de cassis would suit Sayako-san's mood today."

Sayako claps her hands, delighted. "Ohh, it sounds delicious! The mousse, please!"

"As you wish," Tachibana says, bowing politely. He turns toward the counter.

"Ah, Tachibana-san? The other thing I meant to talk to you about- Chikage-san and I will be taking tomorrow night off."

"Eh?" Tachibana protests.

Ono raises an eyebrow. "You said you'd like us to do further research on the uses for cassis, didn't you?" he says pointedly.

Tachibana winces. "Ah, yes, all right then," he grumbles. Ono turns back to the bakery, hiding a victorious grin.
