utter frivolity

Oh internet, I am having a terrible time with life decisions and the making thereof! Which is naturally why I present to you a completely unrelated dilemma instead:

Which haircut should I get?

1.

(This strikes me as a nice length & my hair is fairly similarly stick-straight, except it's thick enough that it will probably look more like--

-- this.)

2.

(My hair is not going to look like this unless I waste money on a perm or waste time with a curling iron, so really it's a matter of bang style/length.)

3. Some non-bob-length thing that will have a similarly evening-out-of-current-layers effect and will grow out with less awkward stages?

I like both, altho I suck at trying to picture what #2 will look like without the styling, heh. Maybe #2 anyway for more different pieces of different lengths? I kind of like that, shrugs. But they're both cute.

I go with 3, only because I'm going to rec a site:

http://www.beauty-box.jp/

I really like this site because it's

1) all presumably Japanese models, so you only see hair styles that are manageable with East Asian hair texture. Also, their facial structure much more closely resembles mine than the usual European models on English hair sites. :)
2) They divide it up into short, medium and long styles
3) Most of their styles, if you click the picture, offer a front shot, a side shot and a back shot

http://www.beauty-box.jp/style/medium/me1907/
http://www.beauty-box.jp/style/short/ri295/
http://www.beauty-box.jp/style/short/dim350/
http://www.beauty-box.jp/style/short/cir010/

Since cutting hair is three-dimensional sculpting, the cut on the sides and back affect the look on the front. I've found that my stylist was quite pleased when I brought in shots from beauty-box, because as it was put:

"Asking a stylist to cut hair based on a picture from the front is kind of like asking a building to construct a house using only a picture of the front side. You can't tell what it's supposed to look like from the other sides."

I've gotten much more successful haircuts - in terms of them turning out like the picture - once I started bringing in the multi-sided shots from beauty-box. :)

I heart you forever! I miss all the Asian hairstyle magazines from Taiwan, especially since like you say, it's good to know if something will work with E. Asian hair.

So glad that people are finding my links useful! :D

I hear ya about E. Asian hair. Straight E. Asian hair doesn't equal the straight European/Caucasian hair in how it behaves. It's always very frustrating when one runs into a stylist that assumes that one equals the other, and a delight when one finds someone who knows how to cut E. Asian hair. :)

Ooh, thank you for this link! I have a hard time finding cuts that would work with my hair, and this will help out the next time I get a cut. ^^

FWIW (and I'm not sure it's worth much *g*) I think you'd look great with a haircut like the first picture!

Hope the decisions (hair-related and not) work themselves out well...

I think the first one is more likely to grow out nicely?

(BTW, if you don't mind the trip, Flushing has the best cheap hair salons with plenty of lookbooks.)

I like them both, but I say go for the one that doesn't involve faffing w/a curling iron. Less faff=more rock, or something like that.

(Sobbbbb all the discussion of styles that work for East Asian hair remind me of getting my hair cut ages ago in Hong Kong & being told they had to modify anything I wanted b/c I didn't have "Asian hair." Which okay I know what they meant, & I don't have that kind of hair, sobbbbbb...)

Hmm! I wonder if my daughter's hair is like yours? It's not East Asian hair that I recognize...but I don't know if it's strictly Euro hair, either...

I wonder if some Filipinos' hair tends to be more like Euro hair than East Asian hair (well: partly depending on whether they have more Chinese or more Spanish background, I guess)? My dad's hair certainly doesn't seem to be like East Asian hair, buuuuuut my actual contact w/it has been pretty minimal, so. ^^;; I've actually never thought about this before wrt that side of my family. It would probably help if I, uh, saw them more.

I've had a variation of #1 for the last 20 years, and it's a hairstyle I go back to again and again -- it's low fuss, classic, and grows out politely. The only other hairstyle I've had as often is growing it out very long. But my hair is very, very straight unless I crop it so short that the cowlick behind one ear becomes apparent.
