announcing: Potluck!

Thanks to several posts (including but not limited to [personal profile] deepad's Doodh se Dhuli, [personal profile] vi's gross, weird, inedible, and [personal profile] troisroyaumes's Seven things), [personal profile] yiduiqie and I were inspired to start an ongoing food carnival! We are happy to announce a call for submissions for the first Potluck, as well as suggestions for themes and volunteers for future hosts.

Potluck is intended to be a carnival for multicultural and intersectional discussions of food. There are no real limits on theme; however, the focus of the carnival is on thoughts and experiences around food through various topics that you might see around the social justice blogosphere, including but not limited to food discussions intersecting with disability, gender, sexuality, fat, animal rights and of course cultural and racial issues. We welcome you to share your recipes as well as your thoughts and experiences, but we ask that you do not submit posts with recipes only. eta; Submissions can be in any format you choose- essays, personal anecdotes, art, comics, etc.- so long as they meet the previous requirements./eta

The theme for the first edition, which I will be hosting here, is holidays. Submissions can range from those holidays you might be celebrating approximately nowish, such as Christmas, Lunar New Year, and Hannukah, or recently celebrated, like Eid al-Adha, or any other holidays you observe throughout the year. You can leave submissions in the comments of this post, or drop me a line at glass_icarus AT dreamwidth DOT org.

Please feel free to submit links to your own posts or to someone else's. You may submit multiple links. Links will be included at the discretion of the host. This carnival is not DW/LJ specific; we welcome anyone to participate from other blogging platforms. The deadline for submissions for the first edition of Potluck is JANUARY 21, 2011.

this sounds like the perfect opportunity to grill* my mother and aunts about their food memories. and, conveniently, they'll all be in town for the hols.

i am absolutely not rubbing my hands together with glee.

*pun not entirely intended

I think this is an AWESOME idea, but I have a few questions. Is this going to be hosted here at your journal? Or is there a community for it? And, I know this is the first one, so there may be room for discussion, but I hope there is room for discussion and maybe, you know, trying these recipes and then talking about them?

I AM SO EXCITED!

I will definitely be submitting to this once work has stopped trying to drown me. I love food and will blather on and on and on about it if given a chance!

I'm also curious to see if previous posts of mine would fit the bill. I did some food related posts during 3 Weeks for Dreamwidth and was wondering if such posts would fit what you were looking for. If you have the time and inclination, they are over here. I don't wan't to resubmit them, but it would give me an idea as to whether I need to rethink my approach for Potluck.

\o/ this sounds awesome. I am going to try to write a post to participate (there's a pretty big culture-disability clash around food that happens to me around Christmas) but in case I don't manage, I recently wrote a post about food and disability involving the issues of cooking on limited spoons and how various writers of recipe books for disabled people appear not to have realised this. I'm not sure if it'd qualify because it's not about holidays (at least not specifically) but you might be interested?

Haha, I totally forgot about this! Uh, I just posted this on learning to cook Chinese food, but while it has a little to do with holidays (I learned largely because my sister was here visiting for them), it's not specifically about holidays, so don't know if you want to include.

Kind of a giant picspam of foods I had on holiday in Odessa, although that's holiday in the British, not the US sense, so IDK. I *think* this qualifies for the purposes of the fest? But you know, IDK.

My post is here. Hope it fits in with what you were looking for. My apologies for the rather late posting, but work is an anaconda determined to eat me whole.

I managed to write something! It is kind of rambly, but does cover both food and holidays, so hopefully it's okay for the carnival?
