I am totally planning on nominating Michelle West's The Sun Sword series, as soon as I actually get the books from the library and can check the character list. :)

I think I might also nominate Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo. There are a couple of minor chromatic characters in that work, and it would be interesting to see someone tackle it and reinterpret them.
