The hard drive might be salvagable. The most likely cause of a computer refusing to turn on is the power supply (was there smoke?) which could screw up the rest of the computer, but is unlikely to affect the hard drive. So you could open the case up (obvs, disconnect it from the wall first) get the hard drive out, buy a USB external case (they're cheap) and install it. Bam, you have a new external drive, preloaded with ahemmables.
