your strategy looks pretty sound to me- although, you know, some of the best porn is also really angsty, and a lot of the AUs i've read were leaning towards the bitter side as well. Remus-and-Sirius-raise-Harry stories (STEALING HARRY! MADDEST HOUSE! &hearts &hearts :D er. well, perhaps not the latter.) are a pretty foolproof way to avoid the darker stuff, although i'm not sure if our definitions of gen are the same.
